Hare control

Hares damage young trees, vines, vegetables and crops, and can undo a lot of work on new plantings.

The problem and the damage

  • Browsing and ringbarking young trees and revegetation plantings.
  • Damage to vines and orchard trees.
  • Losses in vegetable and grain crops.
  • Grazing pasture.

Why act early

New plantings are most at risk in their first season. Reducing hare numbers before you plant protects your investment.

Best time to act

Before and after planting trees, vines or crops is a key time, while young plants are most vulnerable.

How we control them

Shooting by a Category D licensed shooter, often at night with thermal imaging. Unlike rabbits, hares do not live in warrens, so shooting is a main way to reduce their numbers.

All work follows the Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Pest Animals in NSW and NSW firearms laws. We never target native species.

Before we start

  • A site risk assessment covering boundaries, houses, roads, stock, neighbours and native wildlife areas.
  • A written agreement setting out what we will do, where and when, before any work starts.
  • Safe areas and times agreed with you. We ask you to tell us where stock and people will be.
  • No unauthorised people on site while we are working.
  • All equipment supplied. You do not need to provide anything.

How we work, step by step

Who it's for

  • Farms
  • Rural landholders
  • Councils
  • Golf courses
  • Schools
  • Industrial sites

Where a site is close to people, such as schools, golf courses or industrial sites, work is planned around safe times. If shooting is not suitable for a site, we will tell you honestly.

Neighbour programs

Feral animals do not stop at the fence. When neighbouring properties book together, we can plan one coordinated program across the boundary, which usually gives better results for everyone. Ask about group pricing.

Questions about hare control

Are hares the same as rabbits?

No. Hares are larger, live above ground rather than in warrens, and need a different approach to control.

Can you help before I plant a new block?

Yes. Call us before planting and we can plan control around your planting dates.
